My husband and I went to Bullfrog’s in Ortonville for a little date night, and like any true Midwestern outing, I zeroed in on the ranch. We ordered fried pickles, because that is basically just a vehicle for ranch.

I dipped, paused, and looked at him. This ranch… was not it. It wasn’t terrible, just very runny. Like slides right- off-your-pickle runny. And when ranch is that thin, the flavor disappears. Instead of thick, creamy, herby goodness, it was more like a faint suggestion of ranch. We landed on a rating of “It Will Do.” The fried pickles were fine, but they deserved better.

And I know good ranch. Jet’s Pizza sets the bar, and Basil Boys in Tecumseh is next level. Bullfrog’s just didn’t compare.

That said, the rest of our date night was great. The Monday night sirloin special was amazing and the 3 cheese baked cavatappi was rich, cheesy, and worth it.

We would definitely go back… just probably not for the ranch.
